Ovinnova

Programme: Grupo Operativo Supra-Autonómico

AN INNOVATIVE BUSINESS MODEL FOR TRANSHUMANCE, AN ANCESTRAL AND NECESSARY PRACTICE

(2020-2021) Budget: 600.000,00

OVINNOVA is one of the innovative projects awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the 2019 call, for the operation of Operational Groups of the European Association for Innovation in Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (AEI-AGRI) in the framework of the National Programme for Rural Development 2014-2020.

In recent years, there has been a decrease in the national consumption of sheep meat, with a 30% drop [from 120,000 MT (2007-2014) to less than 80,000 MT] from a consumption of 2.7 to less than 1.8 kg/person/year. These data are in addition to a wide range of problems such as the loss of profitability of livestock farms; the lower production of biomass in pastures and natural high mountain meadows; the loss of diversity in the floristic variability and changes in the food chain; the abandonment of extensive livestock farming; the change from extensive sheep farming to cattle farming; the drastic reduction of transhumant livestock.

Faced with all this, the general objective of this Operational Group is to improve the competitiveness of transhumant pastoralism, configuring a new business model for the provision of livestock services, which contributes to the preservation of biodiversity. In order to achieve this general objective, the project has the following specific objectives:

  1. To configure and implement in a demonstrative way, using innovative technologies, a new business model for the provision of summer grazing services for sheep farms in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
  2. To recover pastoral use by sheep in the Cantabrian Mountains and, consequently, to make possible the recovery of the corresponding area of dehesas in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
  3. Assessing and improving the conservation status of priority habitats and species of Mediterranean evergreen grasslands and Cantabrian mountain pastures, peatlands and scrublands.
  4. Dignify, guarantee the transhumance activity and improve relations between livestock farmers-herders-owners-managers-environmentalists.
