On 29 April 2025, the consortium of the European project SOS PRODEHESA MONTADO held a coordination meeting in the municipality of Salvaleón (Badajoz), with the aim of reviewing the technical and management progress of the project, coordinating the actions planned for the coming months and strengthening collaboration between partners.

During the day, representatives of the partner organisations from Spain and Portugal shared their progress and challenges in relation to activities to improve agroforestry management in the dehesa and montado, as well as initiatives related to territorial resilience, biodiversity, climate change and the enhancement of rural heritage. The meeting also allowed efforts to be aligned with a view to the project’s upcoming deliverables and products.

In addition, the meeting included a technical visit to the collaborating communal farm Monteporrino, where pasture improvement strategies promoted by the Extremadura Centre for Scientific and Technological Research (CICYTEX) have been implemented. During the visit, attendees were able to see first-hand the positive impact of these techniques, which have quadrupled biomass production compared to traditionally managed natural pastures, while promoting carbon sequestration in the soil and improving the environmental quality of the dehesa.

These face-to-face coordination meetings help to strengthen the cohesion of the consortium and ensure the impact of the project’s actions in the territories involved.

The SOS PRODEHESA MONTADO project is co-financed by the INTERREG V-A Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2021–2027 and involves universities, research centres, producer associations, cooperatives, NGOs and rural development networks from both countries.
