Today we want to share an exciting update on the Erasmus+ Net0Manager project, which we are developing with the aim of creating a quality toolkit for VET trainers and managers. This toolkit is designed to improve their skills and competences in carbon management, providing innovative Net0 approaches and strategies that can be passed on to future professionals and adopted in companies.

In relation to carbon management, the European Commission published a communication on 6 February 2024, highlighting its commitment to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Most of this effort will focus on reducing current emission levels, although technologies capable of capturing and storing or using CO2 directly from the atmosphere will also be needed. These technologies will be particularly relevant in sectors where it is difficult or costly to reduce emissions, such as cement and waste-to-energy.

The Commission’s Communication underlines: ‘The European Union is committed to achieving zero net CO2 emissions by 2050. While most of this effort will come from reducing current emission levels over the coming years, we will also need technologies that are capable of capturing CO2 or absorbing it directly from the atmosphere and then storing or using it. These technologies will focus on sectors where it is particularly difficult or costly to reduce emissions, such as process emissions in cement or waste-to-energy. The Commission has therefore today adopted a Industral Carbon Management Communication, detailing how these technologies could contribute to reducing emissions by 90% by 2040 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050’.

For those interested, we recommend reading the full document ‘Industral Carbon Management Communication ’ available in Spanish. We highlight some relevant facts from the document: ‘The EU already has a number of policies in place to promote CO2 capture. However, to realise its full economic potential in line with the level of ambition of the Communication on the EU’s 2040 climate target, and to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the EU will need to significantly step up its efforts. The modelling results underlying the Communication on the EU’s 2040 climate target indicate that approximately 280 million tonnes would need to be captured by 2040 and around 450 million tonnes by 2050 (see Figure 1).’
