Historic castles, manors and estates (HCME)

InnoCastle is an Interreg Europe project. The central issue addressed in Innocastle is that in most European countries, current policies towards preservation, transformation and exploitation (PTE) of historic castles, manors and estates (HCME) are outdated and not reflecting the real needs and opportunities of HCME.

The project evolves around the idea of valorising one of Europe’s least known and particular forms of heritage. Mostly located in rural and remote areas, HCME are often unknown to the general public and tourists.

Heritage as driver for rural development

The overall objective of Innocastle is to ensure the sustainable preservation of HCME in four participating regions by remodelling current policies to better reflect the trends and future requirements by means of developing and implementing 4 action plans targeting 4 specific policy instruments addressing HCME.

In the case of Extremadura region, the following actions have been included (phase II):

  • Creation and promotion of a Technical Coordination Committee
  • Initiation and promotion of a comprehensive Regional Heritage Inventory including private Assets
  • Promotion of a harmonized framework for heritage tax treatment at regional level and proposal for improvement at national level
  • Promotion of new technologies for the creation of digital resources and for the touristic promotion of heritage through participation.
  • Development of a Pilot Action involving Alburquerque Castle

Forward looking partnership

The partnership of Innocastle project (Phase II) consists of experienced regions and knowledge intensive partners: National Institute for Heritage (Romania), Ghent University College (Belgium), Province of Badajoz (Spain), National Trust (UK), Province of Gelderland (Netherlands).

Comprehensive approach

Innocastle´s approach is innovative and holistic. It involves a wide range of stakeholders based on the integrative quadruple helix structure. This way, it ensures an optimal and sustainable valorisation and uptake of integrated knowledge and experiences on all levels.

Once finalized the project (2018-2021), a project extension (Phase II) was accepted and it will be developed until November 2022.

Innogestiona is acting as outsourcing support services during the entire project development, as subcontrated organization by Diputación de Badajoz, the regional partner (Extremadura).
